Inspired by a 19th-century drawing, this illustration transports us to the heart of Brazil, along the banks of the Rio Japurá, one of the great tributaries of the Amazon. Bathed in the delicate morning light, the landscape reveals majestic waterfalls, lush vegetation and endless horizons in soft shades of pink and yellow.

In the foreground, a naturalist equipped with his photographic camera contemplates the scene, attempting to capture its beauty. His presence evokes the great scientific expeditions and tales of exploration that fuelled the 19th-century imagination.
