Panoramic decor: Eden in black and white
Painted by Fuchs and manufactured in 1861 by Manufacture Desfossé, this panoramic wallpaper masterfully depicts a virgin tropical forest. It was probably exhibited at the International Exhibition in London in 1862.
It is a heavenly setting whose fantasized representation of nature, with blue and green shades and lush landscape, dense forests, mountains, cascades of flowers and animals, responds to an idyllic vision of a time when botanical discoveries fueled the imagination. It is a representation of an earthly paradise without seasons or geographical boundaries. Plants like lily of the valley, viper bugloss, Alpine carnation, Caucasian scabiousa, Clivia, Peruvian amaryllis, Amazonian bromeliads, Indian lotus, European water lily and Japanese hydrangea, not to mention oaks, cedars and palm trees coexist in this fantastic Edenic world.
Landscape paintings, panoramic wallpapers, were a form of wall decoration, specifically French, in keeping with the taste of the 19th century, for the outdoors and the picturesque. Changing the interior into the exterior, the panoramic launches the imagination through landscapes, mythological stories, travel reports, best-selling novels.
